Organization:
The University of Connecticut is the state's flagship institution of higher learning. Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut has grown to include 13 schools and colleges at its main campus in Storrs, separate Schools of Law and Social Work in Hartford, five regional campuses throughout the state and Schools of Medicine and Dentistry at the UConn Health Center in Farmington.

Challenge:
Since 1965 College Benefits Publishing’s sister organization College Benefits Group (CBG) has been managing voluntary employee benefits for the employees of the University of Connecticut (UConn). CBG also manages voluntary employee benefits for the University of Connecticut Professional Employees Association (UCPEA), a state bargaining unit for employees of UConn.

Over the last five years UConn went through a transition on how it communicates and manages its employee benefits for its more than 5,000 full time employees, 2,000 graduate assistants, and 2,000 adjunct professors.

UConn transitioned from a traditional employee benefits packet approach to a fully digital approach for communicating employee benefits. UConn has extensive and complex employee benefits packages for its faculty and staff that needed to be streamlined and updated with a technologically sophisticated approach.

The new fully digital approach to employee benefits requires the employee benefits vendors and management groups to be more proactive and effective for managing and communicating their particular employee benefits. UConn’s employee benefits office works closely with the vendors to make sure that all faculty and staff have clear and concise information on what benefits are available to them.

Solution:
CBG needed to match the efforts of UConn’s employee benefits department with a new digital management and communications approach to delivering employee benefits. College Benefits Publishing created, built, and manages a comprehensive voluntary benefits communications and database management platform for UConn employees. College Benefits Publishing’s proprietary database system effectively manages all voluntary employee benefits for UConn employees that are offered by CBG.

Results:
The new College Benefits Group management and College Benefits Publishing communications and database management approach increased participation of voluntary employee benefits and has helped to maintain a high level of participation in the voluntary benefits plans CBG offers to UConn employees.
